To clarify the functions of cell/tissue regeneration with a focus on stem cells (See Note) to realize "regenerative medicine" for elderly-specific functional disorders.

Successfully implanted skeletal muscle stem cells in injured muscles, and efficiently reconstructed the muscles. Aiming to apply this technique to treatment for disorders caused by myopathy or muscular depression in humans.
Demonstrated that skeletal muscle stem cells have an ability to grow not only into muscles but also into bones and fats. Currently exploring the possibility of creating various kinds of cells from muscle stem cells and using them to repair tissues other than muscles.
Clarifies how the regenerative ability of skeletal muscles alters with age and what underlies the alteration, and thus contributes to preventing deterioration of motor functions in the elderly.
Develops model animals with functional disorders of skeletal muscles, which are used to evaluate the efficacy of stem cell implantation, and thus contributes to realizing regenerative medicine.
Search for substances that enhance the functions of skeletal muscle stem cells to apply them to preventing deterioration of muscle functions and promoting recovery from myopathy in the elderly.
Discovered protein involved in the repair of the brain. Currently exploring the functions of this protein to develop treatment promoting the recovery of brain functions.
NoteF Indicates parent cells with an ability to produce various kinds of cells.
