@Our institute was established in 1995 as the National Institute for Longevity Sciences (NILS), National Sanatorium of Chubu Hospital, and has since achieved satisfactory results. Initially consisting of 8 departments and 21 laboratories, the research center became the Research Institute, National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology on March 1, 2004, the organizations expanded to 13 departments and 42 laboratories. Since NILS was widely known, we keep using NILS for the research institute. Open recruitment of the department/laboratory directors was started in June 2004, and most positions were filled by the summer of 2005. Research has been conducted according to mid- to long-term plans.
As a core institution for research on geriatric medicine in Japan, our institute is committed to various research areas: clarification and control of the mechanisms of aging; clarification of the underlying mechanisms of age-related disorders such as AlzheimerΥs disease and osteoporosis, and development of prevention/treatment methods; development of measures to improve QOL in the elderly, and research on their ideal care; and development of support devices necessary for the life, medicine, care, and nursing of the elderly. We will also be engaged in additional areas: research on oral diseases in the elderly, research on regenerative/reconstructive medicine, and research on policy science. We had an institutional audit by external auditors in December 2005, developed remedial policies for their indications, and are making efforts for improvement. With the 2005-2009 mid-term plans finalized in May 2006, we are devoted to research activities to accomplish our goals.
As Japan advances to a super-aging society, research on geriatric medicine, as well as social welfare policies, becomes one of the most important national agenda, because the bright future of Japanese people cannot be ensured without measures to benefit senior citizens. On behalf of our staff, I promise you to utilize the worldΥs leading research functions of our institute to the maximum, and ask you for your further support.
